Moyer Defies Odds Again
Last night, 49-year-old Jamie Moyer became the oldest pitcher in MLB history to record a win. The veteran left-hander baffled the San Diego Padres hitters for seven innings allowing 6H / 2R / 0ER / 2BB / 1K. In the process, Moyer tied Hall Of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer for 35th on the all-time list with 268 victories.
Prior to yesterday, Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Dodgers had been the oldest pitcher to win a game in the majors, recording a victory on September 13, 1932 at 49 years and 70 days old.
Despite his advanced age, returning from Tommy John surgery, and defying all of his detractors, Moyer can still get hitters out with regularity. Since 2000, here’s how Moyer stacks up against his contemporaries using the Factor 12 Rating method:
The veteran left-hander performed above league average (24.000) every season except 2010. Moyer’s current 2012 F12 Rating is 24.316.
Congratulations Jamie for making history, again. 300 wins is not out of the question.
